What is a «skademelding»?
In Norway, a car accident is reported to your insurer on the European accident statement — in Norwegian called skademeldingsskjema or simply skademelding. The form is identical across Europe, so a driver from another country can fill in the same sheet as you.
Same form everywhere: The form you fill in here is the same European standard form used by NAF and all Norwegian insurers. No account, payment or registration needed.
You can fill it in digitally in your browser or in Adobe Acrobat Reader — or print it and fill it in by hand. Insurers accept both.
How to fill it in – step by step
The accident statement should ideally be completed at the scene, by both drivers involved:
- 1Open the formOpen the form on this page. All fields can be filled in digitally.
- 2Your vehicle detailsRegistration number, make, model, year and the owner's name. Add your insurance company and policy number.
- 3The other party's detailsTheir registration number, name, address, phone and insurer. Ask to see their proof of insurance.
- 4Describe what happenedDate, time, place and a clear description. Use the car outline to mark where the damage is.
- 5Take photosPhotograph both vehicles, the damage and the scene. Photos are invaluable when the claim is processed.
- 6Both parties signMake sure everyone involved signs at the scene. Send a copy to your insurer the same day.
Tip: Report the damage to your insurer the same day — even if your documentation is not complete. Early notice speeds up the claim.
The seven parts of the form
The European accident statement is standardised and split into seven sections. Both drivers complete their part on the same sheet:

- 2Owner and driverFull name, address and phone number of the owner and the driver.
- 3Insurance detailsInsurance company and policy number for both parties.
- 4Accident detailsDate, time, place (municipality/street) and a precise account of what happened.
- 5Sketch and damageDraw the positions of the vehicles and mark the damage on the car outline.
- 6Witnesses and policeNames and contact details of any witnesses, and whether the police were called.
- 7Confirmation and signatureBoth parties' signatures confirming the information is correct.
Report the claim to your Norwegian insurer
All major Norwegian insurers accept claims online or in their app. You can attach the completed form as a PDF (their sites are mostly in Norwegian):
Frequently asked questions
Where do I get the accident report form in Norway?
You do not need to order it — fill in the official European accident statement free on this page. It is the same form NAF and the insurers use, accepted by every company in Norway and Europe.
Is the form in English accepted?
The European accident statement has the same numbered layout in every language, so insurers can read it regardless of language. Write the description in plain English or Norwegian.
Do I need a report if the other driver admits fault?
Yes, always. Verbal admissions are hard to prove later. The insurer requires written documentation regardless of who is at fault.
What if the other driver refuses to sign?
Note the registration number and take photos of the vehicles and damage. Call the police if the accident is serious. Contact your insurer and explain. If the other vehicle is uninsured, contact the Norwegian Motor Insurers' Bureau (Trafikkforsikringsforeningen, TFF).
How soon must I report the damage?
As soon as possible — ideally the same day. Late reporting can complicate the claim; check the deadline in your policy terms.
